In a hearing before the Senate Budget Committee Gregg dressed down Geithner with facts, figures, and charts. While always keeping his cool, the exchange was somewhere between a mother's scolding, a drill sergeant's questioning and an attorney's cross examination.Gregg politely called the administration's budget forecast a lie.

Unblurred Google Satellite Images Is The Equivalent Of Yelling Fire?

via Techdirt by Michael Masnick on 3/13/09

Earlier this month, we wrote about how a politician in California, Assemblyman Joel Anderson, was looking to force Google and other providers of online mapping/satellite offerings to blur images of schools, churches and government buildings. News.com ran an interview with Anderson, where he attempts to defend his proposed legislation as a matter of public safety. He claims that there is no good reason why anyone would need to clearly see these buildings online, and that it can only be used for bad purposes:
Who wants to know that level of detail? Bad people do.
Apparently, Anderson is the final determiner of what good people do and what bad people do with online maps. Then, when pushed on the fact that forcing companies to blur images of public locations might not pass constitutional muster, Anderson claimed that it was the equivalent of yelling fire:
But since when do you have a First Amendment right to yell fire? This falls under the same category.
I'm curious how that's anywhere near the same category. One is deceiving a bunch of people with an alarming false statement, where the resulting response can put people in danger -- and the other is an accurate representation of a building. Am I missing something?

Judge To Madoff: Hope You Like The Look Of Cinder Blocks, Douchebag [Madoff]

via Consumerist by Meg Marco on 3/13/09

No more $7 million penthouse. Today was Madoff's first full day at the Metropolitan Correction Center, where he'll be spending some quality time while awaiting sentencing. ABCNews has some insights about the facility and its amenities.

He'll have to trade the sharp, charcoal-gray suit he wore to court Thursday for a baggy brown uniform. He'll get to go outside only once every other day, and outside will be a cage on the roof.

"Some of the guards are gonna go out of their way to make sure he knows he's nobody," said Joe Reddick, who served 16 years in federal prisons up and down the East Coast. "That $50 billion or whatever money he had, is nothing."

"In commissary, you're only allowed to spend $253 a month," Reddick said. "So everybody has the same spending limit.

"He may find a guard who might bring him an extra piece of chicken."
...
The schedule is strict: Lights on at 6 a.m., breakfast at 6:30 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m., dinner at 5 p.m., lights out at 11 p.m. During the day, Madoff can watch television, play ping-pong or volunteer for janitorial duty.

Sounds fun! If you'd like to read Madoff's full apology to the court, click here. (PDF)

Rep. Bachmann Claims To Have Taken No-Pork Pledge, But Actually Requested $3...

via Think Progress by Lee Fang on 3/12/09

On Fox Business yesterday, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) joined the long parade of members of Congress who rail against earmarks while requesting their own. But Bachmann took her hypocrisy a step further, claiming that she has signed an anti-pork pledge:

CLAMAN: How about a no-pork bill? Will that ever be a reality?

BACHMANN: I think it is possible. I took a pledge in my own district. I have not taken earmarks in the last three years that I have been in Congress because the system is so corrupt. It's possible to make that pledge.

Watch it:

In fact, according to Legistorm, Bachmann has requested 7 earmarks in Fiscal Year 2008 costing tax payers a total of $3,767,600. Some examples:

- $94,000 for Sheriffs Youth Program of MN
- $335,000 for Equipment Acquisition for Northland Medical Center
- $803,000 for Replacement Small Buses, St. Cloud Metro Bus

As MSNBC's David Shuster noted, Bachmann indeed signed the Club for Growth's 'No Earmark' pledge back in 2008. While she clearly broke this pledge, Bachmann's name is curiously absent from the list of lawmakers making the same pledge for 2009.

Obama hands the reins over to Congress

Despite promises, it looks like the inmates are running the asylum:

President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed a $410 billion bill to fund most government operations through September 30, but warned the U.S. Congress must stop jamming spending bills with lawmakers' pet projects.

"Let there be no doubt: this piece of legislation must mark an end to the old way of doing business, and the beginning of a new era of responsibility and accountability," Obama said in discussing his decision to sign the controversial measure.

"I am signing an imperfect … bill because it's necessary for the ongoing functions of government, and we have a lot more work to do. We can't have Congress bogged down at this critical juncture in our economic recovery," he said.

Read it here.  And better yet - check out this video from this morning's "Today Show" with Matt Lauer - one commentator had some choice words about Obama - "It looks like congress, not the president is in charge."
